Brent, Thanks for your tip on the GUIDs. That was exactly the issue. Getting the various instances to appear in CA has always been a bit wonky for me. I'm in good shape now. (And I've added the step of clearing the GUID to the script for refreshing data in our test/dev instances)

Thanks again,

Check your PSOPTIONS table

Sounds like the Dev and the Test instance may have the same GUID in the PSOPTIONS table. Since GUID is the unique key for the environments in the hub's flat file database, that could explain why Test is there and Dev isn't, or Dev is there and Test isn't.

To fix this problem, for whatever environment is missing in the hub run an update statement to blank out GUID in the PSOPTIONS table and bounce the app server to generate a new one.

Going forward, it's a good idea to set up your clone script to blank out the GUID in the new environment, or to preserve the GUID along with the description fields from the environment that's getting refreshed.

The viewer.xml file created by GetEnvInfo.sh does not have an environment listed for test when dev is there, and it does not have an environment listed for dev when test is there. If I run StartAgent.sh recrawl from my hub-environment (demo), I get demo and test. When I run StartAgent.sh recrawl from my new dev environment, I get demo and dev. I've looked for config differences between the two environments, but haven't yet found a difference that explains this.

I've been using Change Assistant for about a year without too much trouble. I created a new environment -- a development instance of our HRMS. I did that on the AppServer by copying our test instance's PS_HOME to a dev instance. I then re-configured various config files so it 'knew' it was the dev instance (this is how we created all of our instances, and I have notes on what needs to be changed in the various config files -- we've made several this way, no problem). Both test and dev are up and running -- no problems.

After creating the new dev instance, I did a StartAgent.sh recrawl to pick it up. It found it, and I can now see the new instance in Change Assistant. However, my test instance is no longer available in CA. I tried a variety of things last week (as I needed to install a bundle into test), and finally got test to appear by deleting the new dev instance and re-crawling. This morning I copied test to dev, reconfigured once again, recrawled, and again... the dev instance is visible in CA, my test instance is not (both instances are up and running).

When I do a StartAgent.sh recrawl -- I see all the instances on that machine (demo, test, dev for our financials, HRMS, and portal) scroll by -- it's finding them all. I went to my hub and ran GetEnvInfo.sh, and it built viewer.xml without error. All the instances are in the .xml file, and both test and dev look roughly the same (except for the obvious differences in names).

So my question is... Why might my test environment not appearing in CA when I have a dev environment in place?

Thanks,

Brian McLaughlin

RE: File servers showing twice

I've seen this before where an object gets into the Hub's database twice, usually because a PSEMAgent reported the file server on one peer id, then was cancelled, then restarted but it got a different peer id. The only way I know to fix it would be to clear out the PSEMHub's data repository and restart everything. Okay, I usually just pick a different environment to serve as the hub and save some time, but that's the lazy way.

At any rate you should be able to apply your patch, you'll just need to pick the right file server. Do you feel lucky? - Brent Martin

If you have a running agent and the agent's log file shows that it's able to ping the hub, it could be that you're looking at a different hub than the environment is pointing to. Double-check the configuration.properties file in the agent and make sure that the URL is the same one you're looking at in your browser. If that's all good, you might issue a recrawl command and watch the output to make sure that it finds valid PeopleSoft environments in the scan. - Brent Martin

Discovering Hub Environments - messages in CA validation log

Thank you for a great discription of Change Assistant and EMF. It gave me better understanding when I was bringing up my EMF recently. I do have CA up and functioning in my test envirionments. Have applied a bundle to each test environment and now need to move on to production. I'm concerned about a message I see in the CA validation log for step 5 and wonder if you can shed some light on it. For my production environment, 5 agents are listed. Three of them show correct agent info - my process scheduler, application server, and web server. Two of them (duplicates) show info for the machine where my hub runs. I wasn't expecting to see that info under my production environment. It is valid to have it there?

I've set up my EMF this way:
Test environments - web servers on Windows box, app/batch/database servers on AIX box. One of the test web servers used for hub. Window and AIX agents point to the hub. PIA's are single server.
Prod environment - web server on Windows box, app/batch/database servers on AIX box. PIA is mutli-server setup. Don't want to mess with second hub on my production box. Set up agents on prod Win and AIX boxes to point to hub on test box.
After new agents (prod boxes) crawled, went into CA and did validate.

The messages about the hub web server appearing under my production environment -- are they indicating CA believes they are part of my production environment or are they indicating the hub is on a machine other than the web server configured for this environment? - Peggy

RE: Moving Bundles

Well, the short answer is that you can't move bundles from demo to dev without overwriting customizations. Here's basically what I do:

1) Apply bundles to Demo
2) Run compare reports of the projects between Demo to Dev so you'll know what changes
3) Apply the bundles to Dev
4) Re-apply the customizations based on what the compare reports identified. Capture each reapplied customization in a bundle recustomization project.

Then when you go to test, you'll apply the bundle to test as documented by change assistant, then migrate the bundle recustomization project to test.

The "Gotcha" in this approach is the "Alters with Deletes". You'll need to watch the build steps carefully and set project build options in CA appropriately so that custom columns aren't dropped.

Change Assistant does have some functionality to do compares for you , helps set upgrade flags and exports the customized objects to files so CA will reapply customizations itself in the Test and Prod environments. I haven't used this functionality myself, so if someone would like to describe their experiences with that process that'd be great.

Hi Brent, thanks to your article I have now managed to set up CA successfully.
I had also tried to apply bundle to demo and it works, but how do I move the bundle from demo to dev without over-writing customizations ?
I read about exporting customizations and re-apply, but I do not know how to perform that in CA. Could you share the steps ? Thanks in advance - Julian

Further to Tanuja's message (cannot find configuration file at the appserver stage) this case on CC refers; 201042885
The folder PS_HOME/appserv/Search is a new folder related to a new functionality appeared in PeopleTools 8.48: Configuring Verity to run as a separate process managed by the Application Server. Information about this can be found in PeopleBooks: System and Server Administration > Configuring Search and Building Search Indexes.

The Agent tries to retrieve the configuration file psappsrv.cfg for each application server domain, but since Search is not an application server domain, it doesn't find it and shows the above message. The message can be safely ignored, as the agent crawls all the other application server domains and sends the correct information to the Environment Management Hub.
- John C

To make a PeopleSoft File Server show up, you'll need to start a PSEMAgent on your Windows server.

But a file server isn't required, so fixing that issue won't fix your other problem which I've never seen before. Review the staging & output directories, make sure you have permissions there and plenty of disk space, etc. - Brent Martin

Once an agent connects, it will always be registered in the hub until you clear the hub's database. This goes beyond just clearing web server cache. Check out solution ID 200769631 on customer connection.

Basically the steps are to delete the files in the following directories under
PS_HOME/webserv/peoplesoft/applications/peoplesoft/PSEMHUB:

PSEMHUB/envmetadata/Scratchpad
PSEMHUB/envmetadata/PersistentStorage
PSEMHUB/envmetadata/transactions (if it exists)
PSEMHUB/envmetadata/data/*.* (files and directories. Don't delete the data directory itself) - Brent Martin
