Installing PeopleSoft Applications Print
Monday, 27 February 2006
Update: You may find a more current copy of this article in the PeopleSoft Corner Wiki.

Installing PeopleSoft is a moderately complicated process. If you’ve never done it before, it will easily take 3-7 days. Without getting too specific, here are some thoughts on installing PeopleSoft software on a single Windows server:

Download all of the software that you will need before you start. See my previous post for information about Oracle eDelivery and license codes.

You'll need to download the following software at a minimum:

  • All of the PeopleTools CD’s (there are 7 for PeopleTools 8.47)

  • The latest PeopleTools patch from Customer Connection (optional) You can find it on customer connection under Support > Roadmaps and Schedules > 2006 Maintenance Schedule > PeopleTools

  • The PeopleTools 3rd party products including BEA Tuxedo, a web server (like WebLogic or WebSphere),

  • the FSCM application CD, and possibly the FSCM maintenance pack

  • The PeopleBooks for PeopleTools and FSCM (if you want documentation)

  • Crystal Reports, Crystal Enterprise, and the Crystal Install Guides. This is required for running Crystal Reports.

  • Oracle doesn’t make MicroFocus Cobol available, and some processes in Inventory and Ledger won’t run until they are installed. This shouldn’t keep you from evaluating the application, though.

Also before you begin, install your database software, create a small “seed” database and verify you can connect to it. PeopleSoft’s documentation assumes this much is in place before you begin.

You’ll need the PeopleSoft Installation Guide for your database platform from customer connection. It is a 500+ page manual, but you can ignore the UNIX portion which is a good half. The documentation is pretty good, but there are a lot of moving parts that make it complicated.

In general, the installation goes like this:

  • Create a “seed” database and verify connectivity

  • Install your web server of choice (Weblogic, WebSphere, or Oracle’s flavor)

  • Install BEA Tuxedo

  • Install Crystal Reports and Crystal Enterprise

  • Install PeopleTools (basically unzip it to a file server directory which will be referred to as PS_HOME)

  • Install the latest PeopleTools patch.

  • Install the Application into the PS_HOME directory

  • Edit the database creation scripts

  • Create the application database and load application data

  • Configure the web server, create an application server and process scheduler (batch server) domain

  • Configure Integration Broker and other application components

The following configuration worksheet might help you plan your installation.

Feel free to send me an e-mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) if you hit any snags.

Good luck!

I have two questions after installing the PSFT HRMS 8.9 successfully.

1.How to remove the link of trace flag on the signon page?

2.I want to add a "forgot password" link on the signon page for user self service, but I don't find relevant setting in the "web profile".

Would u give some advices?

Thank u with best Regards

You can remove the trace flag link by unchecking the "trace on sign on page" box in the Web Profile, and restarting the web server.

You motivated me to post my "Forgotten Password" instructions, so they are out there in today's post, or at http://www.erpassociates.com/blogs/index.php/2006/02/28/implementing_peoplesoft_forgot_password. />

Kindly explain what to edit in the database creation script. I have not been able to create the Peoplesoft database. Have been receiving error messages such as Oracle not available, PeopleTools version different from database version. I am trying to install PeopleTools 8.48 & Peoplesoft CRM 9.9 on Windows 2003 & Oracle 10g R2 . Web and apps servers are is Weblogic 8.1 & Tuxedo 8.1. I will appreciate your help.

You might work with your Oracle DBA on the database creation steps. "Oracle Not Available" could be caused by missing TNS entries, the TNS Listener not being configured correctly, the database didn't start correctly, etc.

PeopleTools version errors usually happen because the application tables you loaded from the CD are on one PeopleTools release, but the PeopleTools executables you installed are more current. There's a step in the PeopleTools Installation and Upgrade Guide that explains how to run the "REL" scripts to get your database caught up with your PeopleTools.

Hope this helps.

Hi Martin,
I am need to install a peopletools required for install patch. Could you please suggest me the best practice/result-oriented procedure.
shall I:
1. Install pt848 and then install 84810 immediately?? and then start with application installation??

or

2. Install pt 848, install application, run datamover, run application db update (rel847u/rel848u) related scripts.. importing projects..etc., detailed in install guide?? and then install patch 84810?.

Please suggest.

I always install PeopleTools, Install the patch, and continue the rest of the installation from there. I believe the installation and upgrade document recommends this approach.

Hi Martin,
Thanks a lot for the fast reply.

Yes, I have seen both the tools installation document for the particular release and also the application installation document that is there in the peoplesoft customer connection site. Tools installation document of the version says..., (at a step that is after the data mover) if you are installing a required for install patch, and has database changes, apply them now... (and that is after rel847u, rel848u and then.. PT84CUR and PT84CURDEL project copies). But, it does not say that the patch must be installed immediately after the tools installation.
The other document that is there in the customer connection "http://www.peoplesoft.com/corp/en/doc_archive/red_paper/tools_apply_tools_maint.jsp", says, patches for required for install must be applied after peopletools has been installed and before database upgrade. (please look at page 20.) I therefore wanted to confirm if the meaning of "before database upgrade" in the later document is "before running datamover" or "before running rel84xu script" ???.

Request you to please suggest.

Venu Yanamandra

I've done it both ways, but my preference is to install the patch immediately after I install PeopleTools. Then everything is available for the database portion of the upgrade and you only have to go through the database steps once.

As long as the patch is in place before you start running REL scripts and importing the PeopleTools project you'll be OK.

I think the author of the documentation is saying about the same thing.

Hi Martin,

Yes are absolutely right. We installed 8.49 instead of 8.48. I did a few checks to see what actually are being included in the .01 patch (8.49.01) and what steps am I performing (as per my earlier arguments, w.r.t., the pt_848 install document). I confirmed that the required for install patch has to be applied immediately after the tools install for being safe. The first use of the patch actually comes to piture when the tools release and the database release does not match and we run the rel scripts. Then, we import PT48CUR project. This project is updated in the .01 patch and should therefore be executed from there itself. Else, we would miss the step of importing the latest changes in the .01 patch.

to summarize my lengthy and confusing talk in this post. I would agree 100% with Martin that the 'required for install' patch of tools must be applied immediately after the tools are installed.

And, Thank you Martin for such nice posts.

Venu Yanamandra

PeopleTools Upgrade from 8.46.14 to 8.47.13 : Sam
Hi Martin,

I have performed a PeopleTools Upgrade from 8.46.14 to 8.47.13. We have WebSphere as our Web Server.
Initially for 8.46.14 the server name under which the Web domain for PIa was deployed was named as server1. After upgrade can we create the new domain for Tools 8.47.13 under server1 or do we need to create a fresh domain.

Just to keep in mind that server1 is at present the Deployment manager. So, is it possible to create a new enterprise application under server1 or do we have to create a new server?

Sam.

RE: PeopleTools Upgrade from 8.46.14 to 8.47.13 : Brent Martin
It's been a year or so since I've done a tools upgrade on WebLogic, so what I'm saying might be out of date. But when you run the "MPINTERNET" program, use the "Redeploy" menu option to redeploy the server1 web server. There should be no need to create a fresh domain.

The code for the zip file is always on Customer Connection under Updates and Fixes for the patch you've downloaded. It changes with every patch.

Invalid User ID and password for signon. : Tom
Martin,

i have set up oracle 10g and have installed peoplesoft 4.84, all correctly i think, but i keep getting this error when i try and log in using ps/ps. "Invalid User ID and password for signon." i after installed, i ran these scripts: utlspace.sql,dbowner.sql,Pfddl.sql,psroles.sql,psadmin.sql,connect.sql. i am using windows server 2003. any help??

Mr : Venu Yanamandra
Hi Tom,
Not sure, if you have realized the error that you were commiting.
The PS user that is defined in the database is not allowed to login. His CONNECT, RESOURCE and DBA privileges are revoked. And, SYSADM is given the privileges to modify the only table in PS's schema, PSDBOWNER.
So, you will not be able to login to database using PS user. You may try with the people user or any custom user you are using in place of people user.

But, if the error is coming at the start of application server (though I am sure this is not the case, as you have just run the SQL scripts) and you are sure that the functional user PS (that you are using to startup the services) has the correct password, then,
1. Check for the people password. If you have not customized the scripts or not changed the default passwords inside those *.sql scripts, then, people user's password will be peop1e (with letter L replaced by digit 1).
2. If the people password is also correct, then, you may want to run the grants.sql so that your people user has got the required grants to the 3 authentication required tables. (PSSTATUS, PSOPRDEFN, PSACCESSPRFL)

Hope this helps!

RE: Invalid User ID and password for signon. : Venu Yanamandra
If even the above suggestions do not help and the problem is at the startup only, then, enable tracing.
The errors may even point to not being able to find Oracle libraries/binaries. You should add them to the path if the error is because of the Oracle libraries.

Database isntallation done but basic PS tables are missing : Sumit Kedia : http://www.google.com

Hi all,
i have completed the installation of Oracle 10g and People tools 8.49 in my DB server (RHEL4). All the steps were carried out. At the end i m able to connect to the database from the sql developer and application designer but only throuhg the connect id (PSADHR). on checking the database i find that NONE of the basic PS tables are present (PSOPRDEFN and all such basic ones). I m nt able to figure out where did i go wrong.
PS: there were some issues with the upgradation of people tools 8.49 to 8.49.07 and i have not done that. is that creating the proble. If YES, then plz let me know the process to be followed to upgrade and from where to get the patch file.
Thanx

RE: PeopleTools tables missing : Brent Martin
Strange you can connect via App Designer with PSOPRDEFN missing... I'm guessing when you ran data mover's Database Setup wizard the correct PeopleSoft database files weren't there... Did you install the PeopleTools CD's first, then install the Application CD's?
December 14, 2008
RE: PeopleTools tables missing : Sumit Kedia : Sumit Kedia : http://www.google.com
The issue has been fixed and it was because the datamover script (using the database setup of the data mover) for the database had not been run. Now all the tables are there and the instance is totally fine.
Thanx for your instant reply Brent!
